By the time Agatha, his wife's friend, came to visit, Tomas and his wife Katherine had reached a dead end in their lives and their relationship. Tomas has given up on completing his dissertation for a graduate degree in sociology, which would permit him a different career, and has settled for driving a taxi for a living. Katherine has reached her own deadening accommodation with life. Agatha is a vital, bawdy and daring woman who doesn't mince words. Her observations about the couple's married life cut to the bone.
