Not as funny as original
Not so funny or smart
It is not as great as the tv series, but It's actually pretty funny
No one but Steve Carell could have pulled this off. What is difficult about "Get Smart" is balancing slapstick and situational comedy, and then balancing that comedic element against just enough reason for admiring the main protagonist for his intelligence. Too much slapstick at the expense of situational comedy would ruin it, but Carell was able provide a high degree of the necessary gags without losing the audience in a barrage of meaningless personality quirks. What also helped this movie was often the metagags?gags about gags in the old series. In the end, the team of Carell and Hathaway provided just enough class to do justice to the tenor of the old series for those who were into it back then. And if that audience is like me, then it will be pleased with the fact that Carell's character actually adds that touch of innate intellect that we sometimes wished the classic Don Adams had been permitted to portray way back when.
The movie is not brilliant, but Steve Carell is. He wisely decides here not to attempt to mimic the inimitable Don Adams, rather creating his own portrayal of this character. There are similarities, but this is a new beast entirely. A couple of the gags do fall flat, but that's the nature of the beast. I personally enjoyed it highly.
