Three orphaned kids try to get by without an adult to look after them in this comedy-drama from writer and director Natalia Novik. After their mother goes missing with no explanation, teenage Masha Solntevi and her younger siblings Leopold and Albert are left to fend for themselves in a tiny house near the Crimean seashore. Getting by using their wits, Masha and her brothers seem to run afoul of every loser, petty criminal and scam artist in town as they try to keep their heads above water and their family in one place. When a wealthy Frenchman comes to town to settle a family matter, Masha reluctantly considers persuading him to marry her in a bid to provide for her younger brothers. However, though this would make things easier for the family, it would also mean leaving home for Paris, and Masha would have to deny her feelings for the poor but charming census worker who is clearly smitten with her. Get Brunette received its world premiere at the 2008 Moscow Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
