So, you know when people always say the book was better because it went into so much more detail? Well, The Hobbit is what you get when you take the time to write a screenplay that is more faithful to the book. You get (3) 3 hour movies, that are a little slow at times, and depend much more on character development, and story background in order to keep the plot moving along.
Martin Freeman did an incredible job as Bilbo Baggins. Great acting. But the other characters were a little stale and predicatable. Peter Jackson used some of the same tricks and dialoge from the LOTR trilogy, and really these two stories are seperate from each other. I think anyone who thinks this is a prequel to LOTR may be setting themselves up for dissapointment. It was a roll of the dice though, he (Peter Jackson) could have tried to go in a completely different direction and risked alienating the fan base. So, all in all; not bad. But certianly not worthy of 5 stars or a 'Must Go!'.
