Best Picture of the Year, by far

I've seen and admired August Wilson's play on the stage, but Denzel's camera and direction made it come alive for me in unexpected ways. He brings us into their souls and it is a searing human experience. The pace of stage dialogue on the screen only takes a moment to adjust to, and from there the director grabs your attention and doesn't let go. The preview audience I saw it with was fully engaged, gasping at key reveals and devastating drama.

Denzel Washington show!

It is being highly praised as Oscar-material. Washington and Davis are going to be the top winners at Golden Globe and Oscars, so they say. Yeah, Washington dominated the flick alright, so much that it's a 1-man narcissistic show. He directed it also, so it's natural that he gave himself the most "air" time? Well, Davis had a good showing also, but still she's in a very supporting capacity. As a result, we found it to be boring at several spots. Because of his emphasis on the main character, himself, it's boring at times. Oscar winning material/winners ain't necessarily the best, to note.

Without exception, the cast was excellent. The story is powerful and beautifully written. I understand the creative reasoning for retaining the confined staging, but I think film requires broader space.
