Day 40: 'Winter's Bone'

By: cwalton on June 16, 2010 at 12:33AM Comments (4)

Jennifer Lawrence in 'Winter's Bone'On day 40 or day 4, I can't imagine a more bleak or despairing experience than Winter's Bone. I haven't shaved in two weeks, I've gained 12 pounds since we started this project, and my right eye keeps twitching in strange ways. So watching this tale set...

Day 39: 'Mother & Child'

By: cwalton on June 15, 2010 at 12:12AM Comments (7)

Samuel L. Jackson and Naomi Watts in 'Mother and Child'Is it because I'm freaking tired or that I actually am adopted that Mother and Child - a melodrama about mothers, children and adoption - got to me? I'm sure both...

Day 38: 'The Black Hole'

By: cwalton on June 13, 2010 at 8:47PM Comments (8)

'The Black Hole'It's amazing how the glaze of childhood can color your perception. Case in point - The Black Hole. While I fondly recall most movies from the '80s when I was 7 - 17, and have embraced their datedness, I'm not sure I'd seen...

Day 37: 'The Karate Kid'

By: cwalton on June 12, 2010 at 6:22PM Comments (12)

Welcome to The Karate Kid, the Will Smith version. Or as it should have been called, The Kung Fu Sixth-Grader. Or maybe Enter the Mini-Dragon...

Day 36: 'The A-Team'

By: cwalton on June 12, 2010 at 12:42AM Comments (6)

The A-TeamThe highest compliment I can pay to The A-Team movie is that it made me want to watch the TV show. And for someone who reveres '80s movies and would argue that over the last 5 decades, the '80s had the highest output of fun...

Day 35: 'Bonnie and Clyde'

By: cwalton on June 11, 2010 at 12:22AM Comments (2)

Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty in 'Bonnie and Clyde'Five weeks down and 35 movies in...and how does it all end? For now, in a bloody hail of Bonnie and Clyde bullets.

Day 34: 'American Graffiti'

By: cwalton on June 10, 2010 at 12:42AM Comments (4)

Tonight was an extra special movie treat for movie and venue. As part of the L.A. Conservancy's Last Remaining Seats summer series - a month-long program of screenings...

Day 33: 'The Secret in Their Eyes'

By: cwalton on June 9, 2010 at 12:22AM Comments (3)

The Secret in Their EyesRight about now, I'm supposed to be sitting in the New Beverly getting my movie watch on for the fantastic Brian DePalma thriller Blowout starring...

Day 32: 'Splice'

By: cwalton on June 7, 2010 at 8:47PM Comments (11)

Let's see, how do I put this...if you like crazy sci-fi-horror, or if your idea of a good time at the movies is Jeff Goldblum's The Fly, or if you thought Species would have been better with more tentacles...

Day 31: 'Marmaduke'

By: cwalton on June 6, 2010 at 9:47PM Comments (12)

MarmadukeDo dogs a favor. If you love them, or if you love the comic strip, read "Marmaduke" or hang out with a real dog. Unless you're an 8-year-old, or the parent...

Day 30: 'Get Him to the Greek'

By: cwalton on June 5, 2010 at 8:22PM Comments (11)

Since Day 30's afternoon screening was Get Him to the Greek, a comedy about living like a rock star, I figured, why not watch a movie like a rock star? Ladies and gentlemen, if you have the means...

Day 29: 'Killers'

By: cwalton on June 5, 2010 at 12:22AM Comments (12)

Well, no one said it would be 100 days of good movies. I'm still trying to decide what's more believable – Jake Gyllenhaal as a Persian, or Ashton Kutcher as a secret agent?

Day 28: 'Solitary Man'

By: cwalton on June 4, 2010 at 12:07AM Comments (9)

Michael Douglas and Jesse Eisenberg in 'Solitary Man'You would think a movie starring Michael Douglas, Susan Sarandon, Jenna Fischer, Jesse Eisenberg and Juno's Olivia Thirlby would have garnered a wider release or more attention...

Day 27: 'George A. Romero's Survival of the Dead'

By: cwalton on June 2, 2010 at 11:10PM Comments (5)

After nearly freaking out during my last solo outing at the Nuart (the nightmarish preview of The Cremaster Cycle, as the tag line says, "stuck in the craw"), I almost chickened out before I reached the theater for today's screening of George A. Romero's Survival of the Dead.

Day 26: 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo'

By: cwalton on June 1, 2010 at 10:27PM Comments (15)

Day 26 was yet another surreal movie day. I'd had plenty of sleep over the Memorial Day holiday, so exhaustion didn't factor in, and my brain's feeling less throbbish, but sometimes, like Forrest Gump says, you never know what you're gonna get.
