Yesterday afternoon, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed an AICN rumor that Disney was developing stand-alone Star Wars movie and that Yoda was potentially one of the characters who would be getting his own spin-off.
EW is reporting that Disney has two spin-off projects in the works and neither one of them is about Yoda (for now, anyway). The two projects being developed are a young Han Solo origin story and a bounty hunter adventure with Boba Fett at the center of that film.
While LucasFilm and Disney have declined to comment on the two projects, EW reports that the projects are still very early in the development process and could be altered.
The Han Solo movie would take place in the time period between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, meaning the film would require a new actor to play the iconic role.
The Boba Fett film would take place between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, or possibly between Empire and Return of the Jedi.
The two projects would also allow Darth Vader to return as a villain since placing the spin-offs within the timeline of the original trilogy would mean that he is still alive. Disney has been keen on using Vader as part of their Star Wars marketing campaign. The timeline of the two spin-offs also allows for the appearance of other fan favorite characters, including Jabba the Hut.
As far as who could possibly direct these two films, two names have been mentioned based on prior comments made during interviews. Joe Johnston (Captain America, The Rocketeer) originally designed the armor for Boba Fett and told Screenrant that he would like to make a film based on the character. Meanwhile Robert Rodriguez told MTV he would love to make a Han Solo film if it were offered to him.
The question now is who would you cast as a young Han Solo? Who would you like to see direct these two projects? Which Star Wars characters from the original trilogy would you like to see appear in the spin-offs?
