James Cameron Talks 'Avatar' Scripts, Says Sequels Might Go 48 Frames Per Second

By: Sean OConnell on November 29, 2012 at 7:49AM Comments (30)
James Cameron has been talking up his planned Avatar sequels for some time now, though little movement has been made toward actual pre-production. He’s set up shop in New Zealand, and reportedly is fine-tuning the scripts for back-to-back shootings on Avatar 2 and 3. But while attending the world premiere for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit earlier, Cameron finally tipped his hand as to when the Avatar train might get rolling again.

Cameron told New Zealand Radio that he wants to be finished tinkering with his screenplays in February, with the intent of lensing the first sequel in late 2013.

"I want to get these scripts nailed down. I don't want to be writing the movie in post production," Cameron said. "We kind of did that on the first picture, I ended up cutting out a lot of scenes and so on and I don't want to do that again."

And while many point to Cameron’s Avatar as the picture that heralded the return of 3D (or, at least, proper use of 3D), the director is hinting that he might use the sequels to continue the advancement of 48 frames-per-second, which Jackson is using on The Hobbit

"If there is acceptance of 48, then that will pave the way for Avatar (sequels) to take advantage of it," Cameron said to the media. "We charged out ahead on 3D with Avatar, now Peter's doing it with the Hobbit. It takes that kind of bold move to make change.”

But he’ll lie back and see how audiences feel about the visual presentation first. Cameron’s smart.

Either way, the Avatar sequels are coming, likely in 2014 ... and maybe in 48 fps. Are you excited?

Can someone explain it to me what "48 frames" is? Is that sort of like "lexicon" where the movie can be slightly sped up to fit a long movie into a 2 hour slot?

A movie is composed of frames - one frame after another is displayed for your eyes, to create the illusion of movement in our minds. TV in the United States and other countries which use the NTSC standard is 30 frames per second. TV in Europe and most of the rest of the world which use the PAL standard is 25 frames per second. Film universally uses 24 frames per second and has for about 80 years. It has its flaws, such as when showing fast moving objects you basically have the choice between excessive motion blur or excessive jitter. 48 frames per second shows 48 separate images every second, which gives smoother motion and less blur and thus a more detailed and realistic image. See [BLOCKED WEBSITE] for more details.

Douglas Trumbull, when researching his SHOWSCAN process, determined that the audience reaction went up dramatically to the notion of "perceived reality" at 60 fps, it sorta drops off after that. His venues did use that frame rate, but because of its limited distribution, never took off. With Cameron and Jackson both signing on to 48 fps, that's splitting the difference.

I'm anxious to hear more news. Things about the production are getting interesting almost every week for the past two and a half years. Avatar remains one of the most stunningly beautiful movies i've ever seen
