Paramount has done an admirable job keeping a lid on Star Trek Into Darkness
, J.J. Abrams’ wildly anticipated follow-up to his massive hit Star Trek
, which rebooted the franchise with a crop of younger actors.
But that’s all about to change. As we reported earlier, a 9-minute tease will be attached to IMAX prints of Warner Bros.’ The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
beginning on Dec. 14. A conventional trailer will be attached to 2D prints of the same film. And the studio now has tipped its hand with an official plot synopsis, which was posted to Paramount’s press site.
What obstacles will Capt. James T. Kirk (Chris Pine
) and his U.S.S. Enterprise crew face in the sequel next summer? Here’s what Paramount has to say:
“In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes ‘Star Trek Into Darkness.’
When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.
With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one-man weapon of mass destruction.
As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.”
That one-man weapon of mass destruction is expected to be played by the great Benedict Cumberbatch, who’s best known for playing Sherlock Holmes in the BBC’s brilliant reboot. Adding him to the Star Trek universe is thrilling, even though we still don’t really know who he is playing yet.
Star Trek Into Darkness stars Pine, Zachary Quinto, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Alice Eve and Peter Weller. It opens in 3D, 2D and 3D IMAX on May 17, 2013. Now, let’s brace for those upcoming previews!
