DreamWorks Animation Unveils Twelve Movies Thru 2016

By: Derrick Deane on September 10, 2012 at 2:27PM Comments (55)

While most movie studios don't go more than a couple years into the future in planning their production slate, DreamWorks Animation has outlined twelve films they will release over the next four years.

The slate is geared heavily toward sequels but there are also a couple of adaptations of children's books as well.

Here's the full slate of films and release dates:

The Croods - March 22, 2013

Written and directed by Academy award nominee Chris Sanders (How To Train Your Dragon) and Kirk DeMicco (Space Chimps), the film stars Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone and Catherine Keener in a story about a family who are forced to embark on an epic adventure into a pre-historic world when their cave is destroyed.

Turbo - July 19, 2013

Featuring voice acting by Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti, Michael Pena and others, Turbo is the story of a garden snail with a dream of winning the Indy 500. When a freak accident gives him extraordinary speed, he sets out to make his dream come true.

Mr. Peabody & Sherman - November 1, 2013

Based on the classic cartoon, the film finds Sherman using Mr. Peabody's time machine without permission, causing events in history to spiral out of control in disastrous and comical ways.

Me and My Shadow - March 14, 2014

Pioneering a groundbreaking combination of CG and traditional animation techniques, the film tells the story of Dan, our hero's shadow, who yearns for a more exciting life but happens to be stuck with Daniel Grubb, a timid guy with an aversion to adventure. When both of their lives are put in danger, Dan is forced to take control of Daniel and a madcap adventure ensues as they both learn the meaning of true friendship.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 - June 20, 2014

No word on what the plot will be for this first sequel to the 2010 Oscar nominated film, but voice talents Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera and others will return.

Happy Smekday! - November 26, 2014

Based on the critically acclaimed book The True Meaning of Smekday, the film adaptation finds the galaxy's most annoyingly optimistic alien on the run from his own kind. He's forced to team up with a stubborn teenage girl to become the most unlikely duo to ever save the planet.

The Penguins of Madagascar - March 27, 2015

A spin-off featuring the beloved penguins from the Madagascar franchise. No plot details were given, but madcap comedy is sure to ensue.

Trolls - June 5, 2015

Inspired by the mythology of the wildly popular Troll dolls, the film currently include Jason Schwartzman and Chloe Moretz as part of the voice talent.

B.O.O.: Bureau of Otherworldly Operations - November 6, 2015

Based on an original idea by Tony Leondis (Igor), the film stars Seth Rogen in an animated feature that will "bring you ghosts as you've never seen them before."

Mumbai Musical - December 19, 2015

The studio's first-ever Bollywood-style animated musical adventure is inspired by the epic Indian tale of The Ramayana, but told from the point of view of the monkeys.

Kung Fu Panda 3 - March 18, 2016

The third installment of the hit franchise returns with Guillermo Del Toro executive producing. No plot details or casting list were given, but expect the core actors to return for another stint.

How to Train Your Dragon 3 - June 18, 2016

Anticipating a huge hit with the first sequel, DreamWorks Animation is planning a second sequel to the Dragon franchise.

Are you looking forward to seeing any of these films?

You said that twice the second installment 8 years ago was the best of the four Shrek movies. The rest were weak Puss in Boots redeemed itself last fall to my surprise and i was not expecting to love PO so much but he left me surprised. I won't see the new TV show on Nickelodian, I'll just watch Dragons Riders of Berk instead and do you understand what i said about Richie Rich and Casper

Can't wait for the How to Train Your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda sequels as well as Happy Smekday and Mumbai Musical. The others I will skip. I'm going to watch the new Dragons show on Cartoon Network. I bet the KP franchise is going to run out of ideas by the time the 3rd one comes out. Meanwhile, I'm waiting for plans for the Casper big screen revival which I hope will be better than the 1995 film. Alan Menken (Tangled) and Lin Manual Miranda (In The Heights) were supposed to have movies at Dreamworks but that's gonna have to wait longer! Who knows
