Gary Ross in Talks to Direct Disney's 'Peter Pan' Prequel

Since leaving Panem, director Gary Ross certainly has had his pick of projects. The Hunger Games director is now in talks to take on Disney's Peter Pan prequel, Peter Pan and the Starcatchers.

Like The Hunger Games, Starcatcher has the potential to launch a new franchise for Disney as the film is based on the first book in a series of children's novels by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson.

Disney optioned the book back in 2005 with the intention of turning it into a 3D CG feature, but ended up adapting it into a Tony Award-winning stage musical instead. With fairy tale retellings all the rage, it seems the studio is willing to give a film version another shot.

Enter Ross, whose monster hit has grossed $681 million worldwide to date. The selective director is also attached to Summit's Harry Houdini spy film, though there have been no further announcements on that film.

Starcatcher follows a young Peter and his adventures on a ship called the Never Land, which is headed for a land ruled by the evil King Zarboff. On the journey, he befriends a girl named Molly who tells him about a mysterious trunk full of "starstuff" that must be kept away from a pirate named Black Stace. Black Stace becomes Captain Hook later on in the series.

This isn't the only Peter Pan movie in the works though. Sony also has an origin story in the works that has Aaron Eckhart and Sean Bean cast as Captain Hook and Smee, respectively. Sony's version re-imagines Peter Pan as a modern-day detective murder mystery which paints Peter as a kidnapper.

What do you think of Ross helming Disney's Starcatcher? Have you read the novels and who do you think should be cast in the role of Peter Pan?
