Uncomfortably cliched, but worthwhile

The "romance" doesn't work, but it does contribute to the cultural explanations, through the heroin's family relations. It's always relevant and useful to re-cover historicevents and cultural clashes, and I enjoyed the movie nostalgicly, having served 4 years there in the '60s. One tweeter criticising the romantic involvement credibility stated that it started just before the war, but it actually started in 1932, long before the war. Again, flawed, but worthy.

Enjoyed seeing a film with some meat for thought. Makes you consider opening some history books and visiting the Japan plus almost seventy years!

Great story. One of those tales that come out, long after the fact. Had no idea the US government actually thought to put Hirohito on trial for war crimes. Tommy Lee Jones added a bit of "swagger" to the cast. Understand why he was not central to the story. He delegated the task to a subordinate, which is what 4 star generals do.

My favorite TV channels are the History and Military channels. This movie felt like it came directly from that source so I enjoyed it very much. I also liked that at the end they told what happened to the major players.

This was a bad movie. Tommy Lee Jones had a cameo, with one pose and a dozen lines. The only "historical" focus was the story line that he was in. Not much of an "historical" movie. The subplot, the stupid love story, was so unbelievable as to be laughable. If the costuming hadn't been different, it would have be impossible to tell when the scenes were flashbacks. The direction was so poor, the poor actors didn't know what they were supposed to be doing but the worst was the editing. This movie had no flow, no continuity, the choices the editor and director made were just awful. While I appreciate the attempt to teach me something about the American occupation of Japan after the war, there was so little fact and so much emphasis on the dumb love story that this was one of those movies you walk away from saying, "Oh, well, that's 2 hours of my life I'll never get back." Really bad movie.
