Could have been so much better

the basic plot was excellent the storyline awesome, all the things you expect from this director. Only a couple of things *bugged* me. Why is the only job available are in a robot factory to make not even very good robots. So the pay was so bad he lived like everyone else? Second... the healthcare issue was obviously the main concern in the movie.. but there was so much more.. and should have at least been touched on. Overall after all the hype I thought the movie was so so.. but having said that I'm certainly glad we went to see it.

Action Packed and Fast Paced

Lots of special effects, very similar in content to the related movie, 'District 9' and has ZA actor Sharplo Copley in a lead role of assassin, Kruger. Good story, with a 'feel good' conclusion. Good performances by lead actor Matt Damon, and Jodie Foster.

Good enough for Saturday night

The special effects are great, and Damon does a good job. But the story line is weak. They probably should have had fewer characters, and developed them better. Not enough time was devoted to Elysium and the environment that had been created there. If I had written it I would have spent more time on the character played by Jodie Foster.

Boring, simplistic, unimaginative, and boring

In an early scene, Matt Damon's nasty boss insists he go into the dangerous elevator and dislodge the door from the inside. While it makes no sense (why does an elevator get irradiated? why would any sane person go in? how does anyone expect him to get out?), he agrees and of course gets a lethal dose of radiation. There's no explanation for most of the movie--you just know that rich people are evil, corporate heads are evil, politicians are evil, and poor people are mostly evil with a few exceptions like the dying, innocent little girl with the big eyes and soft voice. The action scenes are so chopped up that it's impossible to tell who's winning until the action stops and we see who's standing. Damon's outfit looks like a cheap plastic Halloween costume that dangles from his body. Does it give him super-strength? Sometimes it does, but most of the time he gets thrown all over the place. Avoid this ho-hum movie; it has nothing to offer.

It's about access to health care!

At its essence it's about a battle for access to health care! With a subtheme around immigration. Visuyally a mashup of Blade Runner, MadMax and several others. That the real bad guy has a South African accent presumably and solely because the director is South African tells the commitment to integrity in the process. It's well made, and Matt Damon has great intrinsic appeal, so roughly a 7 out of a 10. Read Ringworld by Larry Niven for a fuller exploration of the concept.
