Veteran director Mehboob Khan directs this expressionistic melodrama about two Muslim half-brothers -- Javed (Surendra) who is good and pure and Sajjad (Himalaywala) who is evil and dissolute. Living under the thumb of a richer part of the family headed by Sajjad and his villainous mom (Munawar Sultana), Javed has his sweetheart bought out from underneath him by his brother. Later, fate switches their roles and Sajjad gambles his fortunes away while Javed becomes a prominent lawyer. Being evil, Sajjad naturally sets out to kill Javed, but his mother kills Sajjad first. Javed offers to marry Sajjad's widow -- who is also Javed's former love -- but she decides to start a school for the disadvantaged instead. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi
