Biography

Educated in England and the Continent, Griffith was a newspaperman before he entered films as an actor and writer for the Edison Company in 1915. Edison's assembly-line methods perfectly suited Griffith's artlessly efficient approach to his work. After Edison folded in 1917, Griffith remained busy at most of the major studios throughout the silent era. On the whole, Edward Griffith's sound features are of more interest than his silents: he was responsible for the first film version of Philip Barry's Holiday (1930), was both producer and director of several worthwhile Paramount productions of the early 1940s, and helmed the enjoyable Fred Astaire vehicle The Sky's the Limit (1943). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
