"Earthwork" a rare look at the nurturing of art
by
Keeping up with the pace of a world that demands speed and efficiency in all facets of life is exhausting. Fortunately director Chris Ordal has provided a reprieve for our souls in his first full-length feature film, "Earthwork."
Kansas crop artist (think of it as a mosaic artist working with acres of ground as the canvas and nature as the tiles pieced together to create art, seen only from an aerial view), Stan Herd (played by Oscar nominee, John Hawkes), takes his Midwestern drive, work ethic and communion with nature to New York City to create an earthwork for multi-millionaire, Donald Trump on land schedules to be used for development. Herd engages area homeless to assist him with the project, cultivating these relationships as he does his art, with patience and respect for nature. The ending's twist will pull the breath out of your chest.
A must-see for any artist or lover of art and anyone with an appreciation for human (and) nature.
