Strong action, weak storyline

No question that the action was entertaining, even if the slow motion effects became tired and repetitive. Major complaint is the storyline, or lack thereof, that wasted a good cast and an opportunity to reintroduce Dredd and the surrounding characters. The plot seemed like it was written for a first person shooter video game, and played out accordingly. Overall, save the money on a theater viewing and wait for home release or inclusion in your cable package.

Last blockbuster until GI Joe in March so get out there and watch this. Plot is deeper than it looks and the action scenes are mostly shot in 3D so it takes advantage of Real D better than most movies i've seen. Don't even think about waiting for this one on Blu-Ray. Take advantage of the best cinema you have in the area.

Better the second time around

This version of Judge Dredd is a major improvement over the Stallone attempt. Good story line that does not focus on re-inventing the characters. You never see Urban's face, which is consistent with the comics. I like Olivia Thirlby as Judge Anderson as well. I hope this is the start of a new franchise.

I had not seen any of the other Dredds so I wasn't sure what to expect but I wasn't expecting much. I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed it!

Judgement: Dredd is a throwback crime actioner

DREDD 3D' is a great movie for those who like taut gritty, claustrophobic crime films; like 1976's 'Assault on Precinct 13'. Coming in at a crisp 95 minutes, 'Dredd' is a film custom-made for audiences tired of having to consider the bad-guys' side of things. Bad guys are BAD, the Judges are hard-assed dispensers of JUSTICE, and everyone else knows enough to get the hell out of their way. There are issues: I really liked Karl Urban in the role of Judge Dredd; but, for a movie based in a future dystopia, it felt a little too grounded..and missed some of the sci-fi weirdness, black humor/satire and gadgetry from the British comic on which it is based. Its also anything but a 'date' movie. Make no mistake: 'Dredd 3D' has the highest body count I've seen in years, and it is visceral as hell. That aside, its a bloody good, uber-violent and utterly satisfying 'cops vs. gangs' film, with the best 3D I've seen, since 'Avatar'.
