Stalone vs DREDD, a comparison without spoilers

Having had the opportunity to watch both Judge Dredd (1995) and DREDD 3D (2012) recently. It is clear that the 1995 film had a much more intriguing plot than its 2012 counterpart. But with the small budget of an inflated $45 million, as opposed to the 1995's less inflated and greater budget of $90 million, DREDD 3D focused itself into an excellent self-contained action flick that delivers a satisfying and simple ending with no complicated story or plot. Unlike the 1995 film, DREDD 3D does not engage its characters or the audience in the problems and draw-backs of the police state nor does it pose any internal conflicts upon its protagonists; allowing the explosive high octane action film to be just that, an explosive high octane action film. By setting philosophy, politics, and character flaws aside, DREDD 3D does not have much to offer the intellectual observer, but offers the audience, as a whole, a look into the daily life of a duty driven law-enforcement agent in Mega-City One

Surprisingly Good

I went to go see this movie as an "entertaining bad-film", but it genuinely shocked me at how good it was. Great cinematics, decent enough plot, amazing visuals. There are only two scenes where I laughed at the gimmicky lines which are nods to the original film. Go see it!

He is the law...

Extremely, unflinchingly, unapologetically violent. It's a movie about a post-apocalyptic wasteland teetering on the brink of anarchy. What were you expecting, a ballet? I really, really enjoyed this movie. If you've ever read 2000AD and are familiar with this character and this timeline, then I think you'll buy into this story and will enjoy what Karl Urban brings to the personification of the good Judge. I thought both Urban and Olivia Thirlby gave fine performances. If you were worried that this wasn't going to be gritty enough -- don't be.

DREDD is worthy

I liked Dredd a great deal. This is going way back, but if you're a fan of Brandon Lee in "The Crow" you'll like this movie. Some violent scenes are a bit over the top - but the film never ventures outside of good comic book splatter. The visual effects were astoundingly good - they managed to infuse Mega-City One with a touch of grungy reality that really set the film apart from the slick CG of similar genre. I left the theater thinking I had just seen something special and look forward to seeing it again once more before it leaves the cinema. I say GO! It's worth your time and money!
