I judge this remake awful. The sentence is death...
OK, first off, Sylvester Stallone's 1995 'Dredd' wasn't great. Not bad, but other than the immortal words 'Double-Whammy' wasn't particularly memorable. But it did have the good sense to not take itself too seriously.
Not so this Dredd. It is 95 minutes of grim, unrelieved bloodshed. It starts off with three gang members being skinned alive (yep, that kind of movie) and tossed off a 200-storey building by Lena Headey's vicious drug-lord MaMa (and she has a blast with the role). Enter Dredd and his psychic rookie played by Olivia Thirlby. They go in to make their arrests, then have to kill their way out of a nuke-proof public housing project of the future.
Speaking of Thirlby... she's the best reason to watch 'Dredd'. I saw it in 3D, but she is the only multi-dimensional character in the entire movie. While a step back from her work in 'Juno', I can't wait to see her in something better than this waste of her talents. I hope Hollywood is paying attention...
