Based on the true story of Jean-Dominic Bauby, The Diving Bell & The Butterfly wonderfully captures the essence of Bauby's memoir. Although there are moments of bitterness it's Bauby's imagination that ultimately sets him free. In the end, his story is one of triumph, will power, and beauty. Visually, the movie is beautiful & arresting. The opening scenes are brilliant and inventive and allows the viewer to experience "locked in syndrome." The use of light, color, shadows and blur all add to the effect. This film is one of the most creative as far as cinematography and editing. Kudos to director, Julian Schnabel, his cinematographer, Janusz Kaminski, and film editor, Juliette Welfling for stepping outside the box. The performance are wonderful and it is difficult not to be stirred by them. Max von Sydow, as Bauby's father, gives a heartbreaking performance that will stay with you for a long time. Don't let the subject matter scare you away. This is a very inspirational film.

Beautiful, strong movie. Excellent direction and visuals. One scene overly long - night walk through Lourdes.
