Die Walkuere

To me as a veteran of numerous performances of this opera, the La Scala production is superb. In addition to the brilliant, beautiful scenic design, the orchestral playing under Barenboim is clear, vibrant and beautiful. The singers act well and sing with dramatic understanding and attractive voices, even the tenor O'Neill, not the most appealing figure on stage but a sensitive musician. The camera work is up to the high standards set by the Met Opera simulcasts. Intermission features are short but worthwhile; Barenboim's opening-night address to the Italian president and other dignitaries at the beginning, in Italian, passionately makes the case for public support of the arts and was enthusiastically applauded.

Great performance, not great venue

To see La Scala - truly remarkable. I really liked the modern performance of an opera classic. There was a constant hiss though that was distracting. I had been in this theater a few weeks before to see the new Harry Potter movie and there was a hiss then, so I called ahead to see if it was fixed. They said it had been corrected, but it hadn't been. I'd love to see more of these performances, but I' m not paying $25 for poor sound quality when it's a musical performance!
