Haunting and full of sorrow, but there is a gleam of hope at the end. No solutions are presented for improving the public school system, but the film acts as a call to arms. The film is poetic and stylish as well as handling several serious issues with honesty and sensitivity. Very moving.

This is the best movie I have seen this year - and a very, very, very powerful "talkie" (in Tony Kaye's idiom): devastating and healing. Grounding. Generous. Don't get why critics did not get it - maybe it lack cynicism. Anyway. It's pure emotion. Acting is superb. Adrien Brody, James Caan and the rest of the cast will just sweep you off your feet. Hats off, Mister Kaye. And thank you.
