Passion wasn't the only spectacular Ernst Lubitsch film which he made in Germany before coming to the U.S. The ten-reel Deception may not have had the sensual Pola Negri, but it did have the formidable Emil Jannings playing King Henry VIII. This retelling of the romance between the king and Anne Boleyn (Henny Porten) was no more or less accurate than any other time it has been put on film, but the costly and sumptuous set design was uncommon for its day. The trade paper Wid's Daily wryly noted, "Henry certainly was a 'devil' with the ladies and from his evident admiration of water nymphs and such, it seems a pity he didn't live in the age of Sennett bathing girls." ~ Janiss Garza, Rovi
