The best thing I can say about this movie is not just Johnny Depp. With Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and the last couple Pirates movies, Johnny Depp made them worth watching. Dark Shadows was great on it's own. He of course was fantastic, but there was so much more than just him. Great movie, great acting across the board.

Burton disappoints with this one

This could have been a fantastic film, but it came up short. The humor was glib and boring, though at times well timed. The acting was good but who cares--the characters didn't have enough depth to begin with (except for the daughter). The plot and development was so utterly predictable I could have slept through the whole thing. Not sure why Burton, Elfman, Depp, Bonham-Carter & the whole crew troubled themselves for this one. And the ending--so lame--please tell me they won't make a sequel.

I'm hearing a bunch of negative reviews about this movie. All in all it was entertaining. I wasn't expecting something epic or mind blogging. It was very enjoyable - I did not get bored with the movie and laughed often. I don't feel it was meant to be anything novel or totally out there (as some of Tim Burton's films are). To sum up, it was lighthearted, funny, and very silly.

Not a fan of "dramedy"

I watched Dark Shadows as a kid (sneaking away to do so without my parents permission). I was looking forward to this film, mainly because of the nostalgia, Johnny Depp, and what I thought would be comedic. There was some nostalgia, Johnny Depp was good--the facial expressions alone make it fun to watch, but the trailers lead us to believe it would be more comedic. I really hate being duped. Why can't Hollywood just be honest? The trailers showed all the comedy--nothing was left. There really was so much darkness and macabre it wasn't fun to watch by the middle. Killing the innocent hippies, really? The plot was a bit contrived and the 1970's family didn't make sense at all--where did these people come from? He was in friggin' box for 2 centuries! And the sexual suggestive material was unnecessary and made it uncomfortable for us since my teenager was with us--it was rated PG-13.

As a die hard Johnny Depp fan and a child of the 70s I loved the movie... Johnny plays the part of Barnabus with his own special touch, and the period setting was spot on. Tim Burton does it again with the fantastically gothic effects and old-school horror themes. No sparkly vampires here! Can't wait for the next one (the ending SCREAMS sequel)!
