Not like the preview

We went in thinking that this was a parody of the original soap opera and left not feeling that way at all! If you were not familiar with the characters, backstory and general gist of the orginal, I think you'd be lost. The funny things seen in the preview were the only ones in the movie, too. The acting was made (I hope) to be like a 1960s soap opera, but it wasn't 'over the top' enough to really make it funny! Johnny Depp was the best part of the movie, but he could sit and read a phone book and find a way to make it work. Don't think I'd recommend it unless someone was a BIG FAN of the original!

Dark Shadows Review

It was a fun and humorous movie with a great cast. It makes you laugh and root for the less than perfect, anti-hero and has a great villain. It doesn't really lull and is easy to follow throughout. Johnny Depp is entertaining and the main reason to see it. It carries supernatural elements like the original series which was nice to see and the 1970s era setting was great. I wouldn't recommend taking children to see this.

I loved this movie. But then again, I am a huge Johnny Depp & Tim Burton fan. Together and separately. I also watched Dark Shadows when I was a kid, every afternoon, after school. Johnny Depp makes a wonderful Barnabas Collins. The only problem I had with it is that his makeup is too white. I realize he is the "undead," but sometimes, he looked too much like Michael Jackson used to. It just looked like white makeup. But overall, it was a fun movie. You can't take it too seriously. The original was campy, but fun. Dark Shadows purists probably won't like it. They take a few liberties with the other characters. But I really didn't think I wasted my money. I would go see it again.

While we love just about anything Johnny Depp does... this movie was a waste of his considerable talents. On a scale of 1 - 10 we gave it a 3.5 (3 for me and 4 from my spouse). It was too disjointed and choppy, and while there were a few humorous moments, it was basically silly and sophomoric. The best thing we can say is we are glad the original Barnabas Collins, Jonathan Frid, did not live to see the release of this movie, having passed away in April 2012. Without giving away any "spoilers", having Angelique give us "a summary" of all her evil-doings over the last 200 years... in the last few minutes of the film (trying to tie all the loose-ends together) was like wading thru War & Peace and getting to the last page of the book to find out "one person was behind it all".
