We went in thinking that this was a parody of the original soap opera and left not feeling that way at all! If you were not familiar with the characters, backstory and general gist of the orginal, I think you'd be lost. The funny things seen in the preview were the only ones in the movie, too. The acting was made (I hope) to be like a 1960s soap opera, but it wasn't 'over the top' enough to really make it funny! Johnny Depp was the best part of the movie, but he could sit and read a phone book and find a way to make it work. Don't think I'd recommend it unless someone was a BIG FAN of the original!

While we love just about anything Johnny Depp does... this movie was a waste of his considerable talents. On a scale of 1 - 10 we gave it a 3.5 (3 for me and 4 from my spouse). It was too disjointed and choppy, and while there were a few humorous moments, it was basically silly and sophomoric. The best thing we can say is we are glad the original Barnabas Collins, Jonathan Frid, did not live to see the release of this movie, having passed away in April 2012. Without giving away any "spoilers", having Angelique give us "a summary" of all her evil-doings over the last 200 years... in the last few minutes of the film (trying to tie all the loose-ends together) was like wading thru War & Peace and getting to the last page of the book to find out "one person was behind it all".

I was a fan of the original series. The trailer looked less than appealing, but when my mother (also a fan) said she wanted to see it, I said okay. This was just not a well thought out movie. Johnny Depp was solid, and Michelle Pfeiffer was okay, but most of the cast was not strong. The plot and much of the writing was wretched. The last 45 minutes was horrible. There were a few laughs early on, but not enough to save it. My teenage daughter, who is doubtless in the center of the target demographic, said "Well, I think that is the worst movie I have EVER seen."
I said "You never saw 'Buster and Billie.'"

I love the Tim Burton/Johnny Depp combo!!! had to see it on the big screen..Tim makes his "sets" with such artistic beauty...as was this one.....i try'd to watch for the ORIGINAL Barnabas cameo...and was so caught up in the moment...it was a flash before my eyes...then my brain clicked in..and he was gone....Johnny Depp was BEAUTIFUL in this!!! i would give it 4 out of 5 stars!!!
