Fun Family Fare
This movie is a contradiction -- it is charming, indie-spirited, and evokes a longing for family love, as well as romantic love -- but at the same time, it is utterly corny and contrived -- particularly the entire Juliette Binoche storyline. And although I would understand someone saying they couldn't stomach this movie's sweetness & contrivances, I fall for this stuff. Maybe I am getting old and sentimental, but I loved this movie because it made me reflect on the simple things I love (and want) most in life. In this sense, I would put this movie together with "Beautiful Girls" and "Indian Summer". I admire Steve Carell for using his over-the-top persona for a broad range of comedy which always includes sentimentality. He is one of my favorite actors.
