Jon Voight at his best!

This movie was excellent. It had everything: drama, comedy, tragedy. A very young Jon Voight portraying teacher Pat Conroy as he tried to make a difference in the lives of poor youth needing a teacher on their small, isolated island. Prejudice abounds but Conroy's joi-de-vivre cannot be stifled even though many try to do just that. My favourite scene is when he takes the children out for an evening trick or treatingon Halloween; something they have never heard of, having lived apart from the 'real' world their whole lives. It's hard not to become swept up in Conroy's enthusiasm for life and teaching. This is one of Voight's best movies and even though it's filmed back in the 70's it still has a modern feel.
