Cloud Atlas: great movie or great confusion?

I sometimes see a film for the plot, the actors, the cinematography, the directing or just for pure entertainment. It's hard to find a niche for this one. It's a huge film, so many stories, plots, subplots, actors in multiple roles (was that really Halle Berry? No, it couldn't be...wait, maybe it was?) This is a real "suspend your disbelief" film, don't even think about leaving the theater for popcorn, just go with the flow...it's too long, probably too daring and too complicated but somehow it works. I found myself thinking about the ideas, broad as they are this morning..are we all connected? does one door open into another? All in all well worth the time...although I did turn on my phone to check the time...more than once.

Cloud Atlas worth watching

I went into Cloud Atlas not knowing quite what to expect. I'd read the reviews about the history of its making, the difficulties the directors ran into during the adaptation, so was expecting to have to work a bit to follow the plot. In the end, that was indeed true. The constant cutting between the different narrative threads took a bit more engagement than I normally expend at the movies. The message of "we are all connected through time" was also a bit hokey and heavy-handed. Some of the make-up was also distracting. Having said that, the film is visually stunning. The action running throughout each of the story lines also kept me engaged. I'd very much recommend it.

One Viewing Is Not Enough

There are so many threads to this movie a person might have to see it several times just to follow each one. As an example, what is the meaning of the shooting-star birthmarks and why does just one person in each segment have one?

Beautiful Storytelling

It takes a little while to get into each of the revolving story lines due to the constant changing between each, but once you get enough of each story to get involved, it's like watching several movies at one time that have subtle overlaps with each other. Each mini-movie is very different, so whether you're a fan of crime dramas, epic buddy movies, love stories, or comedies there is something here for everyone and even more if you love a great story no matter how it's told. It was great seeing all the actors play so many different parts. One downside is that it seemed that we didn't get to see all of the stories..like some of the details were cut...so a bit of the final message impact was missing - but an epic thought provoking movie none the less, and beautifully weaved together.

No point in wasting your time...

This movie was a bunch of jumbled stories that tried to make some sort of statement about fate and life but it fell way short of the mark - ultimately, it made you feel that there might be no point in living at all - don't waste your time or money.
