Claire, director Milford Thomas' debut effort, makes use of a cinematic style reminiscent of the silent film era of the 1920s. With the help of an antique, hand-cranked 35 mm camera, this black-and-white featurette is loosely based on a traditional Japanese fairy tale. When rural domestic partners Joshua (Mish P. DeLight) and Walt (James Ferguson) pine for a child of their own despite the conservative nature of the 1920s South, they are shocked to discover a baby being "born" from a cornhusk in their barn. By morning, the baby has grown into a silver-haired young woman. Claire (Toniet Gallego), in addition to her awesome rate of growth, cries luminescent tears and has an uncanny ability to read from any text put in front of her, regardless of the language. This ability attracts the attention of the town busybody, Miss Earwood (Anna May Hirsch), who insists that Claire travel overseas for a first-class education. The mysterious young woman sees no reason to leave her fathers, however, and realizes that her supernatural gifts mean that her stint on Earth is a brief one -- a goddess of the moon, Claire must eventually go back "home." ~ Tracie Cooper, Rovi
