Marathon Magic/Science

I was pleasantly surprised at how well everyone got along. There weren't any fights or scuffles. There was a mutual respect that governed the 14+ hours fans and newcomers alike sat, talked, watched, cheered, and jeered the movies on. The only disappointment was that the concession stands were not prepared. By the second movie, they were out of hot dogs and pretzels, and low on popcorn. The movies: I have been a fan of the comic books for a long time, and was happy to see the vision of the directors in all the movies culminate to "The Avengers" movie. Action packed, it delivered what we all anticipated - One Big A** Kicking! The humor helped those of us that had just experienced the previous five movies, feel like our time wasn't wasted but justified. The graphics were done well, and in 3D certain scenes got depth that you wouldn't expect - for instance, when you see the crew of one ship vividly as they're hoovering over another. Any more gushing from me and I'll give away too much.

This marathon was an absolutely amazing way to kick off The Avengers movie. I admit sitting for all of it is nigh impossible, but for all those die-hard fans skipping a movie or two wasn't too big a deal, so we didn't have to sit for 16 hours straight. The energy in a room like that is astounding and I fervently hope that Cinemark puts on a similar showing for the release of The Hobbit this winter.

Five epics leading into super-epic..

That's the Avengers Marathon in a nutshell. You get huge characters and character development as well as high stakes conflicts in all of the prequels (which also happen to be great movies - especially the two Iron Man movies and Thor). When it gets to THE AVENGERS, expectations are set such that THE AVENGERS needs go beyond being epic because you just saw five epic movies. You want super-epic when these guys come together. And that's just what happens...super-epic superhero myth. Way more than the sum of its parts (but perhaps only if you watch the other parts), THE AVENGERS is INCREDIBLE. I highly recommend it, and I highly recommend seeing it in this way (watching them in order on the big screen).
