Don't sugar coat it, kid. Give it to me straight....

    by xk8

I'm happy I saw this movie but it's styled for little kids. The (true) story is wonderful but Disney has added plenty of sugar to satisfy the kiddie audience taste. I wish there were an adult version available that showed a bit more of the grit (ala, March of the Penguins)...which would serve to enhance the wonder of the miracle that happens. I don't think Disney has ever lived down killing Bambi's mother so they really sanitized this one (even still, I heard more than a few children sniffling in the audience, and who's to say some of those weren't adults). Tim Allen is the perfect narrator with some funny allusions to Tool Time, however, I wish sometimes he would just stop talking and let the footage run longer and speak for itself. The star of the movie is, of course, Oscar, the heart-stealing baby chimp...you'll want to put him in your pocket and take him home. Watch all the way through the credits...more great footage, plus a gentle nudge to get involved with primate conservation.

    Chimpanzee

My husband & I both loved it. Poignant! Dramatic! Relatable! It was told in a narrative way, with a plot and the kind of comments kids could relate to. However, we felt the film had levels and one could related to it on the appropriate level. Lots of incredible cinematography and information there for the taking. The many children in the theater were enraptured and didn't seem to lose focus throughout. The more violent scenes were done off camera---no worries. Don't leave right away- there is a segment after the story ends where they discuss the amazing experience of filming the movie.

Wonderful movie... great movie, great story to educate kids

I had the opportunity to watch the movie this weekend with my kids (8 and 6) and husband. My girls and me were very touched with the story. Myself and my 6 years old girl cried.
I recommend everyone to get some time (1 hours and 15 min.) to watch, the message was wonderful.

    ADORABLE!!

In one word..."Chimpanzee" is ADORABLE!! My Grandmother & I both love animal shows and truly enjoyed this story. Honestly; we were a little worried our ears would be filled with the sounds of screeching chimps however, it was nothing like that at all. Tim Allen does a fabulous job of story telling and Oscar's chimp family truly captured our hearts! The rhythm of the music played right along with the story and sounds of the jungle surrounded the theatre. Its almost like a "lifetime" movie but done in "chimp style" fashion...a little drama, action, suspense & most of all, filled with heartwarming joy! Being that; the story was about an orphaned Chimp, we were afraid to watch any gory graphic details having to do with the "reality" of life in the jungle and want families to know... this story was done in true Disney spirit and never once had to close our eyes. It's a treat & great show for any age! Best of all; see it now and ticket proceeds will go towards helping save the Chimps future

    Great Movie!!

I took my 4 kids to see this film and we ALL LOVED IT! Their ages are 6, 9, 11, 12 and I'm 42 and we were all so moved by the story and by the amazing cinematography. WOW! It's so beautiful and wild and primal. Everyone should see this film and be awed by the chimp community; their fierce love, sense of community, and sacrifice for the betterment of the group. Really amazing. Humans could learn so much if we could just get over our arrogance at being the "smarter" species.

healthy alternative to the animated cartoons

When I walked in the theater last night with my granddaughter and friend, there was hardly anyone in the theater. I wondered; 'Where are all the people?' The sound in the theater was a little lower than normal during so I was a little disappointed because there is a specific level it should be to create 'waves', but never the less, we enjoyed the video part. When the movie finally began the very first thing I noticed was the great movement; [Cinematography]. The Elapsed Time segments were unbelievable. It was very easy to be captivated into the close-ups of the faces of the animals, the water dripping on leaves, the army ants scurrying about in the morning sun, the tropical rainstorms and of course the emotional joy and pain you felt from the family unit of the chimps. The pace of the movie was the only thing I was concerned about whether or not my 5 year old would patiently sit through, but I was pleasantly surprised to see her enjoying a healthy alternative to the animated cartoons.

    You'll Love It

Forget any newspaper reviews bashing this film on the basis of its narration. It's not a preachy, self- important film. It tells a simple (and amazingly captured on film) story with some humor and a lot of heart just like the Disney nature films from the past. It's not a filmed doctoral thesis but the young audience it captures may just carry its humanity for the rest of their lives. And that could result in a better future for the species- both chimpanzee and human.

    Great popcorn movie

Loved Chimpanzee ~ way too wonderful for words. Makes you think about that 98% shared Gene pool ~ it does seem to be simple ~ eat, sleep, groom, wander and play with your friends, and defend the nut trees. Why do we make it so complicated? And I want to be groomed....

    chimpanzee was great

    by drlou71

very educational and heart-warming. Tim Allen as the narrator was fantastic, especially when he was talking about "tools". My kids loved it (3.5 and 6.5 y/o).

    Special Film

It is unbelievable when you see what these guys go through to film these scenes. Additionally, the death of Oscar's mother (kind of like in Nemo) was handled in such a manner that younger kids would not be upset ... and everyone will be fascinated by the photography, and the story.

A movie with all the emotion and none of the R rated issues!

Such a fresh breath of air! This is one of those movies that you don't have to worry about the movie "over educating" your family. It touches on all the emotions highs and lows but in such a wonderful way that you can come out this movie saying that that little Oscar is such a blessing!

    Beautiful, touching

If you're a nature lover or an animal lover, this is the film to see. The cinematography is breathtaking, beautiful and, at times, very intimate. The story of "Oscar" is touching, sad and heartwarming. Tell younger children that everything works out "okay".for Oscar.

    Chimpanzee will capture your heart!!!

    by l_marye

Exquisite photography; endearing story. Oscar and Freddie will capture your heart and at certain points you will be on the edge of your seat. Because this is real life there is also sadness. Chimpanzee is worth every penny and every minute. I took my grandsons, of which one was two and a half years old and they were both riveted! This kind of movie -- a documentary told as a story --- is one of the beneficial purposes of media; used for good and not for destruction like so many of the movies.

    I love monkeys!

Perhaps I am a little bias (see title) but this movie is really well done. Drags a little toward the end but overall a good movie.
