Luscious on all levels
One must be fairly sophisticated to appreciate this gorgeous film and the story. Collette was one of the most popular and acclaimed writers of her era, and Cheri and The Last of Cheri are her two most successful novels. It involves people who "entertain" others of the upper classes, and what happens when two courtesans fall in love, part, suffer, and search for personal happiness and financial security. Pfeiffer and Bates are extraordinary.
Go for the scenery, costumes, and surrender to an enchanting story that withstands the test of time. The movie rewards us with beauty, charm, humor, and an experience rarely encountered in today's scheme of things.
You will love it, or not, depending on your level of worldliness and curiosity about La Belle Epoch.
