NoCAL vs SoCal

As a lifelong surfer, I LOVED this film. What was great about it was the fact that both leads WERE surfers, unless head replacement are that much improved in Hollywood. I LOVED this film because it respected surfing the sport and the life style. It was authentic as the territorial imperatives, the bad ***surf gangs, the young kid surfer are just archetypes in American surfing. And DP Bill Pope of Matrix fame and a DP that I've worked with as a director was superb. The aerial unit was fantastic. Same for the water units with the world of in water camera people hitting high notes for cinematography. I just am STOKED about Chasing Mavericks because Jay's story was so righteously told. RIP Jay. You and your Board will NEVER be forgotten. Aloha, Bob Carmichael.

Run to see Chasing Mavericks

Gerard Buter would be enough of a reason to see it, but this movie is based on the true story of deceased surfer Jay Moriarty. If you aren't familiar with Mavericks in Half Moon Bay, California, or even if you are, the movie shows breathtaking footage of NorCal 's mountainous and most dangerous surf spot. The theater was filled with surfers and surf families; this is a movie you will enjoy with friends or your children.

I too have screened many movies this summer. Some bad, some good, and a few like Chasing Mavericks, "GREAT". If your looking for a lot of phony shoot m up or the unimaginable you may or may not appreciate this film. If you enjoy wholesome entertainment, with some realism, good storyline occasional edge of your seat situations and deep look into humanity, then this is a must see movie. Denny

Jonny Weston Is A Keeper

I'll admit that I went to this film to watch Gerard Butler, but I fell in love with Jonny Weston's Jay Moriarty. It's tough to imagine another young actor with the ability to show such innocence, pain, wisdom and sheer youthful joy so naturally. He becomes Jay Moriarty and when we see a short video clip of Jay at the end of the film, the personification is seamless. Both Weston's and Butler's athleticism is impressively showcased in this film, Butler's probably the more impressive because of his lack of experience before this film as well as his age (41 ain't OLD, but it's late to start learning to surf). All the performances were excellent, particularly Abigail Spencer and Elisabeth Shue. Others have said it, the surf and surfing footage is some of the most breathtaking ever filmed. My husband actually put on his jacket in the theater about halfway through the film -- you FEEL the cold from the characters spending so many long hours in the Pacific. Family suitable. GO SEE IT!
