Not as good as the original, but still pretty fun
This is one of those movies where you can't take things too seriously. I mean, besides the comedy part. But honestly, Gene Wilder or not, the premise is the same. Comedy's different, but premise is the same. Sure, the Gene Wilder version is far more interesting, but this one's good if you need a cheap laugh or two, and Johnny Depp's a capable enough actor for me not to get bored halfway through. The various new twists on the punishments that are doled out to the kids are rather funny, as are the flashbacks to the days of Willy Wonka and his orally facist father. Final verdict: Rent it, laugh at it, then forget it. It's not worth enough trouble to worry who wears the Willy Wonka outfit. But if you must know, then Gene Wilder definitely pulled off a wittier and more interesting Wonka, despite Roald Dahl getting all pissy about him quoting funky poetry he didn't quote in the book.
