Goes From Good to Great to Miserable
For a movie as rooted in tension as this one, it is unbelievably unexciting. In most aspects. From the first scenes aboard the Maersk Alabama, until the entrance of the lifeboat, the film excels. It is exciting, intriguing, well filmed, well acted, and well paced. From the lifeboat on, the film loses everything and becomes a muddled pathetic attempt at tension and intrigue. I have never seen such a contrast between two halves of a single story. I could not believe how uninterested I became in the film during the excruciatingly predictable second half. I predicted legitimately every plot point, right up to the ending. He's going to do this, he's going to react this way, that guy is going to get more like this, etc. Everything was obvious, and furthermore everything was uninteresting anyway. The action and attempt at suspense overpowered any glimpse of interesting character development or emotional depth. A poor attempt at an interesting story, that just fails on so many levels.
