Call Me Kuchu follows the stories of the late David Kato and his band of extraordinary friends and colleagues as they fight for the rights of sexual minorities in Uganda. Rather than paint his protagonists as helpless victims of anti-gay hate crimes and libel, the filmmaker emphasizes the various wins and losses in their ongoing struggle for first-class citizenship over the last several years. Informative and educational, Call Me Kuchu invites viewers to experience the group's triumphs and setbacks. Its ability to encourage empathy rather than blind, Western liberal rage and compassion is probably the hallmark of the film.
