Great Acting
"Brothers" is a finely acted film w/ Portman, Gyllenhaal, & Maguire surrounded by an amazing supporting cast, including Sam Shephard as a gruff military father & 2 brilliant child actors who often steal their scenes with their warmth and expressiveness. This somber film is about the tough choices people must make in life (far more than just an 'alls fair in love & war' cliche) and how they cope (or often don't) with the consequences of their actions. Gyllenhaal's ex-con uncle struggles to assimilate back within his family as well as society. His bumpy road toward redemption reveals both his shortcomings (public drunkenness) and his humanity (he apologizes to the victim of his crime). Gyllenhaal's performance is honest & nuanced (even at times humorous). Meanwhile, his presumed dead Marine brother, hauntingly portrayed by a gaunt, battle-scarred, & saucer-eyed Maguire, grapples with his fractured conscience & overwhelming guilt (how/why did *he* survive?), not to mention severe PTSD.
