NICE VIEWS OF YORKSHIRE,OXFORD UNIVERSITY ,VENICE AND MOROCCO. seT IN BRITAIN JUST BEFORE WORLD WAR . STRONG MAIN CHARACTERS BUT PERIFERAL CHARACTERS NOT DEVELOPED ENOUGH BUT VERY WELL DONE IN THE TIME LIMITATION OF A HOLLYWOOD MOVIE. I WILL DEFINATELY WATCH IT AGAIN . EMMA THOMPSON WAS EXCELLENT.

Brideshead revisted a long yet great story

Interesting twist on love at a young age and between different classes and religious beliefs. Each character wants out of their own place in life. Its a great period type movie with great acting by all the characters.

Long but definitely worth the price of a ticket

    Pretty settings no charm

For anyone who loved either the novel or the 11 part 1981 BBC series, this will come as a disappointment. There is no time in less than two hours to portray neither the languid--in a good sense--quality of life at Oxford nor the nature of non-sexual "romantic friendships" between college boys in those days. Also, Emma Thompson, great actress that she is was entire too rigid to be attractive to anyone. She comes across as a Mother Superior in aristocratic finery. Very one note and that note rings as "YOU ARE BAD". Claire Bloom in the series had beauty and a "toffee nosed" charm as her weapons. In all, it was not a moving film with none of the heart wrenching quality that was in the book and the series. And to top it all, Charles Ryder is made out to be the villain of the piece rather than the victim. Seeing Castle Howard in Yorkshire again was a pleasure. It is always stunning to try and translate the amount of money it must have cost to build in the early 17th C. into current values

    Brideshead Revisited

Loved this movie, but I have to admit I am a bit biased having lived in England for three years. The cinematography is stunning and the acting is done to a very high standard. That being said, if you're looking for a pat cheerful ending (and I'm not sure how anyone, having scene the previews, could be confused about the film's mood, but...) this is not the movie for you.

    Brideshead Revisited

    by Bowen

I don't want to deter anyone from seeing this movie, and with that being said, here is my review:

The actors are all top notch, but Matthew Goode, who is a ravishing English man, does not take his character (the main character of the movie) where it needs to go. From other characters reactions and words, we are supposed to believe he is somewhat ruthless, using others to climb socially. But Matthew Goode delivers a performance of a man who just gets swept up in the tide and can't help his rise. So it's hard to believe the movie.

I would definitely go if you are a period drama fan as I am and you love the clothing, jewels and pretentions of early 1900 England.

On the whole the movie is interesting and beautiful, but somewhat of a bore...

    Thanks for reading.

    Brideshead Revisited: Emma is fantastic

A must see for those who like British drama. Emma could well end up with an Oscar nod for supporting actress with this one.

    Great movie!

I read the reviews before I went and almost didn't go!
I was so glad I did!
A little slow....but...great message....and if you really analyze it...his thoughts in the end were perfect!
    "Raise up a child".....

    Sumptous, but Slow and Sad...

Having seen the momentous BBC mini-series product when it aired 25 years ago in my impressionable teens (yes, I just revealed my age), I must say I approached this with some excitement and concern - both of which were confirmed.

The movie unfolds in two parts. The first half: spellbinding, hopeful, innocent, joyous, luscious. It's champagne, country houses, servants, strawberries, aristocratic. Just little hints are dropped about the constant role of religion that gains force with each scene until it completely overwhelms everyone by the end. Thus the second half: forlorn, dark, gloomy, lonely, hopeless, slow.

To be sure, that's Evelyn Waugh's structure and intent. But the movie moves at such a slow and deliberate pace that I really just want it to end. Story transitions are a bit abrupt at times, and our protagonist's true intentions are never fully explained. Aside from trimming 15 minutes, it's worth seeing the good performances and spectacular scenery.

    We Enjoyed This Film

    by orcas2

I am not a movie expert by any means but Brideshead Revisited was a much more enjoyable film for my girlfriend and I to watch then The Dark Knight. For me a film needs to have story line that I can believe and follow in some kind of logical way. It is also very nice to take a break from the explosions and violence that is in so many movies these days. Many years ago I enjoyed a film called Room With A View. Brideshead Revisited was a nice movie.

    Escape from Brideshead

It's fitting that this movie was released on the eve of the 2008 Summer Olympics, because the cast of Brideshead Revisited were forced to sprint at world record speed through a movie that sweeps over the 20-year lovelorn entanglements of an aspiring artist with a decaying British aristocratic family.

Based on the classic Evelyn Waugh novel, the story has been compressed, hokied up and dumbed down for general [read American] theater audiences. The only way to understand the plot of this movie is if you have already read the book. And if you read the book and loved it, you will hate this movie.

This 100-minute movie suffers from the inevitable comparisons with the brilliant 13-hour Brideshead Revisited miniseries released in 1981 that starred Jeremy Irons, Claire Bloom, Laurence Olivier and John Gielgud. In this newly released movie Emma Thompson is the only star who adds any real spark. Forget the movie. Rent the 1981 miniseries.

Look before you snub for impratical reasons...

Fantastic adaption. Many people will snub it because it is not an exact replica of the TV series, however I see little point in creating a duplicate. Its a wonderful movie that explores other aspects of the novel and boasts a great cast including the always amazing Emma Thompson and my new favorite, Ben Whishaw who is captivating in every scene. I plan on seeing it again, and soon.

    A Deep And Moving Film

Wonderful acting, beautiful scenery, and a very moving story which gives you a great deal of food for thought. Could be nominated for best film and Emma Thompson for Actress. A story that we can relate to.

    Beautiful to Look At

If you're a fan of English period pieces like Room with a View, Howard's End, Shadowlands, etc., you'll probably love this movie. Most people, though, will be like the gentleman seated in front of me who was audibly snoring halfway into the movie. I expect it will receive Oscar nominations in categories such as art direction, costumes and at least one acting category (Supporting Actor), none of which will translate to more than a week or so in the first-run theaters. That may actually be a blessing because many of its rich, atmospheric, quiet scenes were offset by the BOOM-BOOM-BOOM coming through the walls of the multiplex from The Mummy playing next door.

A good period movie. The story and characters are trite, but the costumes, scenery and acting make it bearable. Better on the big screen.

It's different from the TV series but better than anything else at the general box office right now.
