Trapped in a brick lane...
I really enjoyed this slow paced movie about a Bangladeshi family that moves to the East End of London. The contrast between the open spaces of home and the claustraphibic street of the east End is forcefully emphasised. by director Sarah Gavron who does a wonderful empathetic portrayal of our heroine Nazeen, played beautifully by Tanishtha Chattersee. Forced into an arranged marriage to a portly middle aged man at age 17, she is a dutiful wife and raises her 2 daughters in London in a life bordering on poverty while her husband's grandiose plans come to nothing. Then suddenly her life is changed by falling in love! Lots of questions are raised here, the Muslim faith, a husband's domination over women, plenty of food for thought. I won't spoil the plot, but this film is based on an excellent book and as usual there are those that say the book is better, but a film is a whole different art form so just enjoy it for its own artistic story telling qualities. Not for the action fans!
