The "M" word

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that "Boyhood" is a masterpiece. Not since "Brokeback Mountain" have I been so moved by understated and gentle performances. Kudos to LInklater for his exquisite direction and not caving to the public's need for plot and action. This is like nothing we've ever seen, not only to watch the Mason Jr character grow up before our eyes, but in an age where we deplore signs of realistic aging I loved watching Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette over time. Do I think most people will love it like I did? No. As I walked out I heard the women behind me talking about how it "went on and on". I didn't want it to end. If you have a short attention span or are bored by lack of action, this is not the film for you. It was my favorite movie of the last several years.

Disappointing and dark... No hope

Very disappointed in this film. With all the great reviews I expected so much more. The only positive was watching the characters grow up. This movie had only tough situations that the family had to deal with and no positive aspects. The boy deals with multiple moves, porn, sexual relations as a teen, alcohol and drugs...all in discovering who he is! Why does the world today find this encouraging? This is sad! We should expect so much more from our youth, and from our parents. The movie was also long, found myself checking my watch continually. Yet stuck it out hoping that the movie would and with some hope, yet it disappointed again and ended very abruptly. I do not recommend at all!!!

Trite, Boring, Vapid

If you stripped out all the cliches from this film there'd be nothing left. It opens with a boy lying on the grass contemplating the clouds. Gee, where'd I see that before? A cruel alcoholic wife-beating stepfather. A predatory college professor on the make for a female student. A noble yet struggling single mother. A woman trying to break out and get through that darn glass ceiling thing. Awkward teenage boy meets girl, loses girl to college jock, finds better girl. Jock plays Lacrosse, he must be snooty. A sad empty nester mother. A true-blue first husband who's always there when needed, bless his heart. Hate George Bush. Hate patriotic Americans. Love Obama. Hate war. Hate Big Oil. The Iraq War was just for oil wasn't it? Give me a break. The target audience for this movie is high school/early college age who haven't yet seen all this before. They say this movie took 12 years to make. It seemed to take 12 years to sit through.
