In this confusing and overacted collage of daydreams and reality, a young Tatsuo sees his father as a tyrannical paterfamilias, who has already sent his daughter to live with an aunt because the family has so little space at home. The father has always promised to build a house for his family at the base of Mt. Fuji, but those promises are empty until Tatsuo finds a journal kept by his grandmother which can make his father carry through on his promise of the new house. In the meantime, Tatsuo has fantasies of himself as a fearless warrior, his father as a nightclub singer, and many other visions that are hard to separate from the actual narrative itself, causing many a confused viewer to lose the storyline. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
