Stars/Director billings will translate to high box-office receipts. GRADE: B-minus

I just attended the advance press screening of this movie-adaptation of journalist/author David Ignatius' novel of the same name - superbly screen-written by Academy Award-winning William Monahan (Kingdom of Heaven and The Departed). This well-edited 128-minute spy/political thriller by director Ridley Scott was engaging - although, it was basically a run-of-the-mill Hollywood formula action-audience-geared production - car chase, explosions, guns/bullets/gore. Production values are slick - top-notch. The hard-to-swallow story/plot was contrived - far-fetched. The (ineffective) CIA was portrayed as possessing superior technology - that surprisingly did not translate to better results in reality. Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Mark Strong and Golshifteh Farahani turned in good performances despite their characters' lack of depth/development. The unsatisfying ending was disappointingly anti-climactic. Verdict: A 'So-so' movie - but GO for the thrill/suspense/action.

“BODY OF LIES” – There are MANY bodies here, & not all of them are ‘LIES’! =

[From an advance preview:] This new Ridley Scott film is so complex, there’s not only swirling INTRIGUE, but also “OUT-trigue” & “MIDDLE-trigue”! LEONARDO DiCAPRIO plays a CIA agent in the Middle East, trying to root out terrorists. He regularly in contact (usually by phone) with his boss, played by RUSSELL CROWE (who at times is a fascinatingly “detached” mastermind often doing 2 or 3 things at one time). You often don’t know who’s really on which “side”, & it’s captivating to try to figure out who’s who & what’s what in this well-constructed thriller. You’ll wonder who you can trust, & for how long-- & WHY you feel that way. There’s an often-meandering morality at work amongst the various characters here, & you’ll get a good idea on how DIFFICULT it is to live such multi-layered (& often un-“level”) lives. It’s got some fine action, impressive acting by the principals & minor characters, and it’ll make you “think” about a lot of things (some which you’d probably rather NOT deal with)

A Engaging, Intense, Well Written Thriller

I had the pleasure of seeing this film on opening day. I enjoyed this film, thought the cast including Dicaprio were great. Now, I can understand why some may be not like this film because of the Iraq War, but I disagree. I think if you look at the quality, acting, direction, the suspense writing, this is not your typical political, Iraq war type of film, this is more about who do you trust, how do you know how to trust your superior even if she/he is pulling strings behind your behind, so this film raises and makes you think about moral issues like these. I firmly believe that Dicaprio will get a Oscar nod, if not a win for sure.
