    Biutiful

If you like off-beat, slices of life deep to the bone, this is your kind of flick. Javier Bardem delivers Uxbal, a believable good-bad guy who shifts his values to keep himself and his two kids alive in the back streets of Barcelona. For anyone facing the downhill side of 50, Buitiful covers all the spiritual bases: life after death; how to live a virtuous existence; how to determine what's right from what seems wrong.

Love for the flawed characters oozes from every frame of Biutiful. Uxbal, is exploited as much as he exploits immigrants in this vaunted tourist destination. He's not above taking money for "helping" the dead move on from the living. Nor is he immune to the pulls of humanity's softer side: the erratic love of his mentally ill wife or the desperation of an African woman and her baby.

When Uxbal sees a short time to make a difference, he tries with unexpected results. Warning: not everything is spelled out. This story is as "Buitiful" as the whole human race.

    Gritty and Gripping

    by Timo57

Being a huge Javier Bardem fan, I was eager to see Biutiful, without knowing in advance much about the story of the movie.
While I was certainly not disappointed with any aspect of this movie, including wonderful acting performances, precise, skillful direction and a gripping story, I was not prepared for the depth of sadness and despair the movie conveyed, with an incredibly realistic look at lives of people with no candy coating of how trying and downright frightening people's lives can be, mostly in an attempt to survive and maintain family and other relationships.
This movie seems to force the viewer to participate in the reality of all of this despair, which is an amazing feat. There is subtle, very well executed cinematography throughout as well.
I look forward to viewing it again, (although need for a few months to pass before I do because of the intensity) because it has so many messages and metaphors that most can relate to on some level.

Gutturuly depressing. I had to step out for 10 minutes at one point for fresh air, as Inarriti and Bardem were able to grab and tear at my gut and soul, making me feel literally ill.....it was that good.....and bad. You have to see it yourself and make up your mind.

    Biutiful

Great movie!! Not easy to watch. Reminds me of a Vittorio de Sica film. Should win a Oscar for best foreign film. Bardem is superb, best male actor this year and should, but probably won't, win best actor award at the Oscars. Don't miss the opportunity to see it in a movie theater.

    Gut-wrenching

This is a very difficult movie to watch - a view of life in Barcelona that tourists don't see. It covers terminal illness, immigrants trying to survive, labor exploitation, dysfunctional parenting.
But the acting is superb - especially Javier Bardem who dominates the movie. The cinematography is wonderful. Because of the themes I feel this is a movie best seen by adults.

    Biutiful

Although the acting is "nomination" worthy.... to me it was not worth sitting thru 2+ hours of the most depressing story and characters to showcase great acting. ..this will send me out to see Justin Bieber to clear my head and heart.

    Biutiful

Dark and sometimes depressing. Gritty. Long film - 2:27. Too long. But beatuifully directed with a docu- reality show-like, hand held cinema verite' approach. Bardem is great. Well written with clever twists and turns and some surprises. I give it a B+. Meaning, I liked it but it could have been told in two hours.

    Biutiful

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Of course I found it sad, but it was very well done. Showing the other side of beautiful Barcelona was eye opening. Fine acting by all! I always find foreign films interesting. This one is more of an adult movie.

    haunting

Javier Bardem deserves the Oscar for this gut-wrenching performance. I've seen the other best actor nominees and, while I thought they were all excellent performances, the complexity and dimension of Bardem's character and portrayal make him the superior actor this year. The movie, itself, is unrelentingly sad and viewers need to be prepared for that. I think it could have been edited down a bit, but that is a minor criticism. The ensemble acting is excellent; special kudos to the actress who played Bardem's wife for playing such an unsympathetic character with empathy and restraint. I've been thinking about this movie now, days after seeing it, which is not something I can say for most movies I see. It reminds me of Aldomovar and his effective use of nontraditional characters to convey the most universal truths of the human existence.

    Biutiful with Javier Bardem.

I expected more from Alejandro Inarritu. I was disappointed. Any of you seen this? What did you think?

    AMAZING!!

    by ptara7

Javier Bardem rocked the screen as usual. He seemed so natural in this role. This movie was everything a foreign film should be...at least for me - suspense, excellently written, several plot twists, a bit of humor, and just that overall sense of a foreign film that American films just don't have.
