Lumpy begins as a wry account of a young couple's wedding reception but quickly becomes an unusual and compelling love story that is at once heartbreaking and hopeful; most certainly beautiful.
Writer-director Ted Koland and actors--particularly Tyler Labine, Justin Long and Addison Timlin--develop convincing yet not overwrought relationships centering on two sympathetic, complex characters (not the bride and groom, incidentally) and those who love them. The story line's range of difficult situations reveals genuinely human, multidimensional people doing their best to cope. And the casting is dead on.
The film's Minnesota locations and artfully detailed sets and costumes are completely authentic, making the backdrop seamlessly congruent with the narrative. The setting and characters may be reminiscent of Diablo Cody's Juno, but Koland's exceptionally good writing imbues Lumpy with even more wit and grace.
Don't miss this gem.
