Jack Black was pretty incredible -- quite a departure from his typical oafish characters. And the story is wonderful, odd, disturbing and brings up quite a few interesting uncomfortable truths.
I definitely recommend it.

Jack Black did an excellent job as Bernie, the overall "show" was just informative, wasn't good but wasn't bad. More like interviews with a story attached. I only went to see it because Bernie officiated and sang at several of my family members furnerals. Bernie did have an awesome singing voice. And YES he actually was that nice and likeable. Didn't care for the fact that they didn't film it entirely in or around Carthage, the openeing scene driving into Carthage is actually Hwy 21 heading into Bastrop Tx. And sad but true small East Texas towns folk do talk, dress and act like that.

I strongly recommend this movie!! What a performance by Jack Black!! Best I've seen from him...in one of the best movies I saw all year. Hard to find another movie that will make you feel as conflicted as this one. Sheds light on small-town America and the justice system. In the end...the right decision was made...and I felt justified. I bet every member of your familiy will feel different than the other....but OH it's so good!!

I work in the oil industry and am familiar with Eaqst Texas. This file captured the essence of East Texas and all its quirks. Not to mention its a darn good filem. Jack Black was amazing, as well as Shirley McLaine. But the best of all were the townspeople. Anyone thinking of going should read the article in Texas Monthly first. It gives you a better appreciation of the movie.

This was a phenomenal portrayal of Small town East Texas. The style is very "Best in Show" or mock-umentary, but the things that the people in the town were saying were all Texas "ism"s and phrases that you're unlikely to hear outside of the state lines (maybe around the south, but still very well portrayed). It was funny, sweet, and worth seeing!! Jack Black's character is strange, but not in an annoying, Nacho Libre way. He is genuine and really did the real Bernie justice. (I had no idea this was based on a true story until the credits!). GREAT FLICK!
