Don't let the 3D fool you!!!!!!!!

I've never written a review but I felt compelled to write one because I've never been so outraged by a movie. I think all English teachers shed a tear, or threw up in their mouth a little, when they saw this movie. It distorts the epic poem of Beowulf so much that it's barely recognizable. The animation was awful. I felt like I was watching Shrek. I don't know about the whole "next generation of graphic animation" thing. My boyfriend's video games have better graphics than this movie. The 3D made it bearable, but it wasn't worth the $25 we paid for it. The cartoonish animation combined with the pathetic attempts to make some parts funny makes this movie so stupid. It would have been 100 times better if it would have been filmed as a REAL movie. People are too caught up in the 3D effects to realize that this movie has a crappy plot.

better then i thought it would be

    by lizard

i went with my fifteen year old son and husband just to be a good mom and i ended up really enjoying it very much, great story and great special effects. Not for younger then 10, left our nine year old home, he would of been terrified the monster is pretty scary. I really liked it

    Beowulf cries wolf!

    by ajc1962

I heard on a local radio station the other night the two talk jocks lamenting how bad this movie was. I had wanted to see it and went with my usual rationalization that what I want to see I do, regardless of what the critics or others think. I mean how many times have we all seen a movie the critics hated and we loved it or vice versa? So I went in with my 3-D goggles (which always makes me giddy for some reason) and remained open minded. It took about 14 mins for my mind to close! The movies graphic effects were fantastic! Other than that the story was long and boring and rather meaningless. To put it plainly...it sucked! I debated with myself several times about getting up and walking out, something I hate to do. I remained for the entire movie and found myself wondering how best I could of spent those couple of hours. If you use the members reviews at all and you usually go to movies others dislike thinking you might like it...please just this once avoid this one! 2 out of 10 stars

    Not the Story I Remember

The Good: The digital 3D effects were very impressive. Anthony Hopkins is, as usual, outstanding - even as a re-animation.

The Bad: This is not the real story of Beowulf. So much artistic license was taken that (1) Beowulf is made out to be one of the bad guys, (2) Angelina Jolie's character (Grendel's mother) is completely inconsistent with the real story of Beowulf, and (3) Anthony Hopkins' character (King Hrothgar) is made out to be a foolish drunkard. The advertisement that this is the retelling of the famous ancient story of Beowulf is misleading, and while it gets you into the theater, it is a disappointing, sensationalized Hollywood retelling of the story at the expense of famous ancient literature. If this was my heritage I would be pissed.

The Ugly: This movie goes right up to - and probably crosses - the fine line between PG-13 and R, and yet adds no value to the real story.

Great Look, but a Forced Theme

The tragic-seductiveness-of-power theme is very perhaps, but many of the images hit a deep chord, and come back to you. 3-D is wow. Nudity is -- why not? The use of Anglo-Saxon art is rather good -- esp the drinking horn. Too bad only monsters and clowns are allowed to use actual Old English. Those intrigued should check out Seamus Heaney's translation of the original Beowulf.

Great, Clean 3D - Digital Angelina

The 3D was very impressive. The movie was quite enjoyable. I don't know who digitized Angelina, but they did a delicious job of it.
