Beautifully crafted, not for the mainstream audience.
Now if you are of a serious turn of mind now and then and adore Merchant Ivory productions you are in for a treat. Reminiscent of Summerset Maughm books and films, this has a terrific story of love and unfaithfullness and loyalty, always a potent mix rhat ends in tragedy, the question is when and how. Set in southern India in 1937, which is just prior to Indian Independance and partition, this tale touches on many themes I think, the treatment of locals by some priviledged and 'superior' Brits, who also think they can be friends (within limits) and the attitude towards women is put to the ultimate test. Superb cinematography, director Santash Sivan has experience in screenwriting, cinematography and all aspects of 'The Business! The Actors all give of their best, and since they all have much experience and many credits this is high praise. The attention to detail must be noted and as for the ending, make up your own mind, is there a shred of decency and honor left?
