Beer Wars: Great idea, poor execution

I think this movie is trying to appeal to both beer geeks and novices alike, but ultimately I think the real beer aficionados will be disappointed with the lack of depth and unanswered questions, while those not into the beer world will probably be bored.

As a beer geek, I wanted more info about the institutional mechanisms hinted at (such as the 3-tier distribution system) that stand as barriers for craft brewers to enter the market, but was left hanging. On the other hand, novices to the industry may wonder why relative giants such as Samuel Adams and Mike's Hard Lemonade are grouped with the smaller craft brewers such as Dogfish Head and Stone - the latter have experiences much more reflective of the realities facing craft brewers today.

Ultimately it's mildly entertaining (especially the live Q&A portion), but not worth the price of admission unless you don't know much about the industry and want a very basic primer.

i work in the beer industry and am an overall beer connoisseur. i found this film entertaining to a certain extent if you dont know much about the battle of micros vs macros and the overall history of beer and how it came to be what is is here in the states. i really didnt like how the movie mainly focused on moon shot beer (which is a beer that also has caffeine in it) and the dogfish head brewery. the movie went from being an overall educational film about, to a personal biography of the woman founder of moon shot beer tryin to get someone to invest in her brew and dogfish head from keeping its course of honest brewing without selling out. i think the movie would have been better if it focused more on the overall status of micro breweries without so much focus on those 2 breweries in pertricular. thats is my only complaint though, especially because my friends and i made up the majority of the whopping 20 people that were in the theatre watchin it.

The movie is a must see if you are interested in the micro-brew beer movement and if you enjoy watching a very well done documentary.
