Cents and Sensibilities
The lovely Anne Hathaway, the iconic Maggie Smith, and the reliable James Cromwell combine to make this movie watchable, but despite the considerable charm and talent of the cast, it never rises above that; watchable. Jane's love interest, Mr. Lefroy, doesn't possess evidence of the character, wit, or physical presence that would make him a worthy interest for the complex Jane. Instead, he (and Jane's brother) are portrayed as lay-about whore mongers without the scruples of decency, but who the audience is expected to love merely because they are attracted to Jane or women in her household. The script gives us nothing in terms of convincing transformation for these shallow gentlemen, so the "great romance" of Ms. Austin is left looking more like an irresponsible teen crush than the deep, soul-entangling connection it is obvious the director wanted us to see. Jane's rich, but bland suitor is well played and intriguing but underutilized. Save your cents and sensibilities-Rent it.
