Easily recognizable for her trademark long cigarette holder, short black hair, and close-fitting cap, Beatrice Lillie was once hailed as "the toast of two continents," but especially loved in Great Britain where she was the most popular comedian of her era. Lillie was born in Canada and originally performed with her sister and mother in the Lillie Trio. She came to London in 1914 and soon became a popular part of Andre Charlot's revues. In 1927, Lillie debuted on Broadway and became best known for starring in This Year of Grace which her friend, Noel Coward, wrote just for her. She first appeared in film in Stage Stars on Stage (1925). Following WWII, Lillie hosted her own radio show and occasionally embarked upon world tours. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
